Philadelphia, PA - Rex 1516 has moved two doors down South Street to its brand new space at the formal Royal Theatre, and it is Big! Beautiful! And stunning!
The Rex at the Royal
Rex at The Royal is now located at 1524 South Street. Still, he features their restaurant's popular Southern-influenced fare and creative dishes, and unique cocktail options.
The restaurant and bar now occupy one of Philadelphia's most historic buildings. Built in 1919, The Royal Theater was the cultural center of Philadelphia's African American culture during the 1930s. When the theater had earned the reputation as "America's Finest Colored Photoplayhouse."
The theater closed its doors in 1970 after attendance dwindled, and the threat of the proposed Crosstown Expressway, which was never built, caused many businesses at the time to relocate.
Today, the historic theatre is home to Rex's Southern-influenced food and drinks, with over 6,000 square feet of space. The interior has been completely overhauled in a beautiful art deco style, with a large bar area up front and large dining spaces, an upstairs bar area, and private event spaces.
In the kitchen, look for Rex 1516 classics, including plenty of traditional southern favorites as well as a large selection of seafood options. As well as some of the best classic cheeseburgers in the city.
