Pizza Capital of the World Old Forge, PA

At its origins, old forge began cultivating its reputation as a pizza mecca during the early 20th century when Italian immigrants settled there to work the coal mines. Once their shift was finished, these Italian workers would gather at local taverns after work for late-night snacks of homemade pizza, made by baking dough containing garden-fresh tomatoes and spices on rectangular pans; eventually, this delicious treat would be topped with mozzarella cheese and other fillings to complete their meals.

Today, Old Forge boasts more than 160 pizza shops and restaurants offering this distinctive type of pie, most within three square miles of downtown Old Forge. While similar people own many, each offers their take on pizza with recipes handed down through generations of family ownership.

Old Forge pizza features a thin crust that's lighter and chewier than other thick crust pizza styles, with a sweeter sauce that often includes diced onions for flavor and a combination of cheeses such as standard mozzarella and Cooper/American shredded varieties.
