Philadelphia, PA - By the powers vested in me by my Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook posts, I proclaim Aston the foodie capital of eastern Pennsylvania.
Philadelphia Cheesesteak Adventure at Ryan's Deli
The best part is in Aston, you get big-boy portions, not the small plate portions that other wannabe foodie capitals offer up.
Holy Mackerel!! If I were on the Philadelphia Pumpkin Bread Pudding Adventure, my personal quest for the ultimate pumpkin bread pudding, My quest would be over!!
Someone tweeted to me about Ryan's Country Market. On Google Maps, it comes up Ryan's Country Market, but my receipt says Ryan's Deli. Call it whatever you want, it is on Marionville Road in Aston.
Ryan's Country Market is in an unassuming strip mall about 50 yards off of Pennell Road and had a Non-Stop flow of regular customers coming and going. Some were picking up very big orders, and one gentleman with bad knees was picking up an Italian Hoagie for himself and a Turkey Hoagie for his wife.
The ladies working the counter were wonderful. They knew their stuff, and most of the customers, and kept the orders flowing. I had a good feeling about Ryan's, and I saw bread pudding in the case.
I asked the nice lady behind the counter about the bread pudding. She said the one tray was pumpkin bread pudding, and they were not responsible if I became addicted to it. Addiction is a strong word, so I got an order of pumpkin bread pudding.
Now I was on a roll (pun intended) and asked about the Cajun Crab Dip. Unfortunately, they were out of it, so I asked what was their next best Ryan- made item. She said they have the world's best chicken salad.
I thought that was a little bold considering chicken salad is a chicken salad, but I got a tub of chicken salad. Oh, my goodness! This is the world's best chicken salad. Unfortunately, we have to talk about the Cheesesteak.
The Cheesesteak could be Ryan's Deli's Achilles heel. It came on a standard roll. The cheese was melted very nicely, but this Cheesesteak was wet. You can see in the video a cheesy watery substance gushing out of the bottom of the Cheesesteak on every bite.
The watery cheese did not help the mushrooms. Luckily I also got and have leftovers of their chicken salad and Pumpkin Bread Pudding, so I am still very, very happy I stopped at Ryan's Country Market.
