Philadelphia, PA
- Philadelphia winters can be brutal, but I recently found the perfect antidote to the cold at Grace and Proper, a new neighborhood corner bar and kitchen in the heart of South Philly's Italian Market. I'd heard the buzz about this place – it's the latest venture from Chris Fetfatzes and Heather Annechiarico, the masterminds behind some of my favorite Philly spots like Hawthorne's Beer Cafe, Wine Dive, Pivot Coffee and Soupery, The Cambridge, Tio Flores, and Quick Sip. They teamed up with Jon Medlinsky from Kensington's Martha, so my expectations were high, to say the least.
A European Oasis on a Chilly Philly Night
Stepping into Grace and Proper on a cold winter evening felt like discovering a hidden gem. The interior design is a masterful blend of sleek and retro, with industrial elements that give it a warm, lived-in feel. The exposed brick walls, the soft lighting, and the cozy seating instantly transported me from the chilly Philly streets to a classic European bar. It genuinely felt like a Friday night well spent at a staple bar you'd stumble upon in Naples or Lisbon.
Cozying Up Inside (and a Peek at the Outdoor Space)
While Grace and Proper does have outdoor seating, the winter weather naturally led me inside. The indoor space was buzzing with a warm, inviting energy. I could see myself returning in warmer months to enjoy the patio, but on this particular night, the cozy interior was exactly what I needed. I also noticed they offer cocktails to go, which is a great option. I am excited to try their weekend brunch when it comes out. They also have delivery and takeout if you don't want to leave the house.
A Taste of the Italian Market with a Portuguese Soul
The menu at Grace and Proper is a love letter to the Italian Market, with a strong Portuguese influence. They're committed to sourcing ingredients locally, and you can taste the freshness in every bite. Even in the winter, the dishes burst with flavor. The menu is described as an "ode to the Italian Market," and I could see why. It's clear that Chris and Heather, along with Jon, have poured their hearts into crafting each dish. I love seeing so many new restaurants focus on seasonal ingredients. There were Italian and Portuguese influences everywhere.
Winter Warmth on a Plate (and in a Glass)
I opted for a selection of their small plates and bites, perfect for a cozy winter evening. Every dish was a delicious surprise, showcasing the unique blend of Italian and Portuguese cuisines that defines Grace and Proper. The flavors were bold, comforting, and exactly what I needed to warm up from the inside out. The carefully curated cocktail menu was equally impressive, with several options that incorporated warming spices and seasonal flavors. I had a delicious hot cocktail with whiskey that was perfect for the cold weather. This place is a homerun for happy hour, cocktail bars, or just a night out. I can see why people call this place one of the best wine bars in the area.
My Winter Verdict
Grace and Proper is more than just a bar; it's an experience. It's a cozy escape from the winter chill, a place where you can savor delicious food, enjoy expertly crafted drinks, and feel transported to another world. Even on a cold February night, the warm atmosphere and incredible food made it a memorable experience. I highly recommend checking out Grace and Proper if you're looking for a unique and inviting spot in South Philly. It's perfect for a romantic evening, a night out with friends, or even a solo adventure at the bar. I'll definitely be back, in winter, spring, summer, or fall. I have heard many people call this one of the best new restaurants in Philly.
