New Sports Bar 'Marsha's' to Open on South StreetPHILADELPHIA, PA - Philly is preparing to welcome Marsha’s, a new sports bar and venue set to open its doors on the iconic South Street later this summer. Located at 430 South Street, the new establishment aims to be more than just a place to watch a game; it is envisioned as a vibrant community hub where all sports fans can come together in a welcoming and inclusive space to celebrate sports and connection.

A New Vision for South Street:

The bar is the creation of founder and Philadelphia native Chivonn Anderson, for whom the location holds special meaning. "South Street was the only place I ever felt comfortable growing up,” said Anderson, who spent the '90s finding a sense of belonging in the neighborhood. “Creating Marsha’s on the corner of South Street and Passyunk Ave feels like a full-circle moment. It’s about building the kind of bar everyone feels welcome stepping foot in.”

Demonstrating a deep commitment to creating a lasting space for the community, Anderson has purchased the building where Marsha’s will be located, as well as the liquor license. Her leadership and vision for building inclusive spaces have already been recognized; in 2024, Anderson was honored at the Philadelphia LGBTQ+ Hall of Fame Awards with the Best Small Business Leader Award for her work as Director of Development at Redcrest Kitchen.

On the Screens: A Unique Programming Focus:

Programming at Marsha’s will reflect its commitment to inclusivity and representation in sports. In a unique move for the city's bar scene, women’s sports will take center stage on the TVs. Of course, all beloved Philadelphia sports teams will also be prominently featured. In addition to sports, other screens will be dedicated to showcasing a diverse range of film and television that celebrates unique stories and creators.

A Tribute to an Activist:

The bar’s name, Marsha’s, is a tribute to Marsha P. Johnson, an iconic and trailblazing activist who was a central figure in the fight for civil rights. The founder notes that Johnson's legacy of resistance, joy, and community empowerment is at the heart of everything Marsha’s stands for. By honoring her name, the bar aims to serve as a welcoming space where that spirit of courage and inclusivity lives on.

Menu and Opening Details:

Marsha’s will be serving up "everybody's favorite bar food and drinks" for guests to enjoy while catching a game, though the full food and drink menu will be announced closer to the opening date.

The bar is slated to open at 430 South Street at the end of summer in 2025. Those interested can follow along on their website and social media channels (Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok) to stay up to date on construction progress and official opening announcements.
