PhillyBite10SOUTH JERSEY - Along the Jersey Shore, summer isn't just about the beach—it's a fierce, seasonal culinary pilgrimage. From the sprawling boards of Ocean City to the neon glow of Wildwood, the battle for your appetite is defined by iconic institutions that have mastered the art of feeding millions of tourists in a matter of months. While high-end dining continues to expand inland, the real action still takes place right on the wooden planks, where legendary Pizza, towering cups of curly fries, and perfectly swirled custard reign supreme.

The Pizza Heavyweights and the Great Swirl Debate

If there is one food that defines the Jersey Shore, it's boardwalk Pizza. But allegiance to a specific slice is often tied directly to which exit you take off the Garden State Parkway.

Down in Ocean City, the undisputed king is Manco & Manco Pizza. Since 1956, their piemen have operated like professional athletes, tossing dough in the window for crowds that wrap around the block. Their signature is a sweet, tangy sauce swirled in a spiral over the cheese, served blisteringly hot.

Further north in Seaside Heights, the swirl technique gets a different treatment at the legendary Maruca's Tomato Pies, where the sauce and cheese form a hypnotic, heavy-handed bullseye that commands absolute loyalty. Meanwhile, the southern tip of the state belongs to Sam's Pizza Palace in Wildwood, which has been churning out its distinctively thin, crispy-crust slices to fiercely devoted locals and tourists since 1957.

The Boardwalk Fry Wars

Pizza might be the main event, but French fries are the ultimate walking food, and the competition is just as ruthless. The undisputed heavyweight champion of the deep fryer lives on the Wildwood Boardwalk: Curley's Fries.

Operating since 1974, Curley's crinkle-cut fries are an institution. Served in massive, overflowing buckets and meant to be drowned in salt, vinegar, or ketchup, they are a mandatory stop. But they aren't the only ones drawing crowds. Up in Point Pleasant Beach, Chippy's Fresh French Fries holds down the fort, offering a perfect balance of soft and crispy that has its own cult following among northern shore-goers.

The Sweet Finish: The Custard Legacy

No boardwalk crawl is complete without the mandatory dairy cooldown, and in New Jersey, that means frozen custard.

The crown jewel of shore desserts is undoubtedly Kohr Bros Frozen Custard. Originating in 1919, their towering, perfectly swirled cones of orange sherbet and vanilla custard are a visual staple of the summer. With outposts stretching from the Wildwoods down to the Cape May Washington Mall corridor, the smooth, egg-based custard is silkier and denser than traditional ice cream—designed specifically to withstand the melting heat of a July afternoon on the boards.

The 2026 Season: Consistency is King

While the restaurant industry across the region faces shifting trends and closures, the boardwalk heavyweights prove that consistency is bulletproof. You don't need a massive menu overhaul to stay relevant when you have a 70-year-old recipe that works. Whether you're a lifelong local grabbing a slice at Manco & Manco or a day-tripper braving the lines for a bucket of Curley's, the quintessential Jersey Shore menu remains a delicious, unchanging anchor in the chaotic summer landscape.
