SouthHouse Cheesesteaks Philadelphia, PA - I spent a lovely Sunday afternoon, except for the Eagles losing to the Giants, eating cheesesteaks, and recording Philadelphia Cheesesteak Adventure Podcast episodes at SouthHouse in South Philly.

South Philadelphia's SouthHouse

I loved the owner, Anthony's, and SouthHouse's story. Anthony and South house answer two of the top 5 questions that I get all the time.

  • What's the difference between a good Cheesesteak and a bad? Brotherly Love AKA Caring. Anthony makes his own ketchup, honey ketchup. That is attention to detail. He puts the same attention to detail in his cheesesteaks and everything else on the menu.
  • Why do Philadelphians eat cheesesteaks? Cheesesteaks remind us of family gatherings, nights out with friends, great dates, and bad dates. Philadelphians have a lifetime of memories imprinted on cheesesteaks, and SouthHouse is the quintessential neighborhood bar.

Anthony has renovated the place, put something for everyone on the menu, including the drink menu, and joined a dart league. He didn't come right out and say it, but he hinted that COVID was a way to end the dart league because his team was about to win.

Sunday Brunch at SouthHouse

The Sunday Brunch at SouthHouse has $5 classic citywide (rail shot of whiskey and a can of domestic beer) for Mom, brunch cheesesteak for Dad, and pancakes for the kids. This last sentence was only an attempt to list menu items, and I do NOT suggest/judge people for what/when they eat/drink.

I started with a Cheesesteak the way Anthony would eat a cheesesteak. I really need to stop doing this. Anthony likes traditional South Philly style, fried onions, provolone cheese, and long hots. This is a very well-made cheesesteak. The roll was good, but we did have a blowout.

SouthHouse Cheesesteak

Everything gets plenty of grill time. Even the roll spends some time on the grill getting to know everyone.

I wish it was bigger, but it was under $10. It also came with SouthHouse cut daily, half regular/half sweet potato fries dusted with SouthHouse made seasoning. Let's not forget the SouthHouse honey ketchup for dipping, attention to detail.

We also ordered the Brunch Cheesesteak. The same cheesesteak as above just substitutes long hots with scrambled eggs.

Overall this was a great cheesesteak in what only can be described as the quintessential neighborhood bar in the heart of South Philly.
