PhillyBite10OHIO STATE - The retail landscape in Ohio is facing a period of rapid transition this spring. As shifting consumer habits and financial restructurings take their toll, several household-name fashion brands are significantly reducing their physical presence. From major mall anchors to boutique staples, these departures represent a new chapter for the Buckeye State shopping hubs.

1. Rue21 (All Locations)

In a major blow to teen fashion, the Pittsburgh-based Rue21—which has long maintained a massive footprint in Ohio—is liquidating all of its stores after filing for its third bankruptcy. Unlike previous restructurings, the retailer was unable to find a buyer to keep its physical doors open.

With over 30 locations across Ohio, the impact is being felt in almost every corner of the state. Key spots undergoing final liquidation sales this spring include:

  • Ohio Valley Mall (St. Clairsville)
  • Mall at Fairfield Commons (Beavercreek)
  • Stone Creek Town Center (Cincinnati)
  • EastGate Mall (Union Township)

The brand is expected to finish its total wind-down by late spring 2026, marking the end of its decades-long tenure as a mall mainstay.

2. Express (Columbus & Greater Ohio)

The news of Express's downsizing hit especially close to home, as the fashion giant is headquartered in Columbus, Ohio. Following its Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing, the brand is closing nearly 100 stores nationwide to streamline its operations in preparation for a potential sale.

While many Ohio locations will remain open, several underperforming stores are in the final stages of closing sales this spring. The restructuring focuses on exiting high-rent mall spaces that no longer align with the brand's "Express Edit" boutique strategy. Liquidation at affected sites is expected to conclude by May 2026.

3. Eddie Bauer (Multiple Locations)

The outdoor apparel pioneer Eddie Bauer is facing a total liquidation of its brick-and-mortar assets this season. After the entity operating the brand's 175 North American stores failed to find a buyer during bankruptcy proceedings, the decision was made to shift the brand to a digital-only model.

Ohio shoppers are seeing the final days of operation at several prominent locations, including shops in Columbus, Cleveland, and Cincinnati. Most stores are expected to be completely vacated by mid-to-late May 2026. Moving forward, the brand will survive primarily through e-commerce and wholesale partnerships.

4. Francesca's (All Remaining Locations)

The boutique staple Francesca's is reaching the end of the road for its physical storefronts. Following an "unexpected" loss of funding and a subsequent liquidation filing, the chain is shuttering all 450+ of its boutiques across the country.

Ohio shoppers will lose their neighborhood boutiques in several major centers, including:

  • Polaris Fashion Place (Columbus)
  • Kenwood Towne Center (Cincinnati)
  • Liberty Center (Liberty Township)
  • Crocker Park (Westlake)

Going-out-of-business sales have been underway since late winter, with most locations set to vacate their spaces by the end of this spring.

A Shifting Horizon for Ohio Retail

The departure of these apparel giants leaves significant vacancies in Ohio's premier shopping destinations. While the loss of these stores is a blow to traditional mall culture, developers in cities like Columbus and Cincinnati are already pivoting toward "experiential" tenants—such as indoor pickleball facilities, healthcare clinics, and luxury residential units—to breathe new life into these large commercial spaces.
