PhillyBite10GEORGIA - The retail landscape in the Peach State is undergoing a major shift this spring. As we move into April 2026, several national giants are finalizing their departures from Georgia’s shopping centers and neighborhoods, driven by bankruptcy liquidations, corporate restructuring, and a transition to digital-first business models.

From the busy malls of Metro Atlanta to the coastal hubs of Savannah and Brunswick, here are the five major retail chains closing doors in Georgia this month.

1. Big Lots

After failing to secure a buyer during its Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings earlier this year, the discount giant is officially liquidating its remaining footprint. All Georgia locations are transitioning to "Total Business Liquidation" mode, with final doors expected to close by April 30, 2026. This affects dozens of communities, including:

  • Atlanta (Chamblee Tucker Rd)
  • Augusta (Peach Orchard Rd)
  • Savannah (Abercorn St)
  • Marietta, Columbus, and Macon

2. Macy’s

Macy’s is entering the final stage of its "Bold New Chapter" plan to shutter 150 underperforming stores across the country. This month, the historic Northlake Mall location in Tucker is finalized for closure. Once a tri-level anchor that defined the DeKalb County shopping experience, the store is being vacated to make way for a rumored large-scale redevelopment of the mall property.

3. Kohl’s

As part of a targeted cost-cutting initiative, Kohl’s has identified 27 underperforming stores for closure this spring. Georgia is losing one of its major Metro Atlanta locations this month: the Duluth (W. Liddell Rd) store. The company is shifting resources toward its more profitable branches and expanding its small-format concepts in other markets.

4. Popeyes (Sailormen Inc. Franchise)

In a major blow to the local fast-food scene, Sailormen Inc.—one of the brand's largest franchisees—has entered bankruptcy. As a result, approximately 20 locations across Georgia and Florida are closing this month. In Georgia, closures are concentrated in the southern part of the state, including multiple sites in Waycross and Brunswick, as well as locations in Jesup and Hazlehurst.

5. Foot Locker

Foot Locker is nearing the completion of its "Lace Up" strategy, which involves shuttering 400 underperforming mall-based stores by the end of 2026. This April, several "C and D" mall locations across Georgia—specifically those with significant overlap with other banners—are reaching their final day of operation. While the company is opening larger "Power Stores" in Atlanta, older mall-based shops in secondary markets are being phased out.

Key Information for Georgia Shoppers

  • Liquidation Bargains: Big Lots is currently offering the steepest discounts, with most inventory marked down by 70% to 90% as they reach their final days.
  • Gift Card Deadlines: If you have gift cards for Big Lots or Express (which is also finalizing closures in several North Georgia outlets), consumer advocates recommend using them immediately before the final liquidation dates.
  • Employment Resources: With hundreds of retail jobs affected in the Metro Atlanta area, the Georgia Department of Labor is offering "Rapid Response" services for displaced workers at several local career centers this month.
