MAINE - The retail landscape in the Pine Tree State is seeing a significant shift this April. As national brands grapple with bankruptcy liquidations and corporate "footprint optimization," several familiar storefronts are reaching their final days of operation.
From the bustling corridors of the Maine Mall to the local hubs in Bangor and Augusta, here are the five major retail chains closing doors in Maine this month.
1. Francesca’s
The boutique fashion retailer is finalizing its total nationwide liquidation this April. After a series of financial challenges, including a loss of critical funding, the company is shuttering all of its approximately 450 stores. In Maine, the final "Going Out of Business" sales are concluding at high-traffic locations including:
- The Maine Mall (South Portland)
- Bangor Mall
2. Eddie Bauer
Following a bankruptcy filing earlier this year, the outdoor apparel veteran is exiting the physical retail space. Without a buyer to maintain operations, all North American stores are scheduled to close by April 30, 2026. This includes the prominent location at The Maine Mall, leaving a significant vacancy in South Portland's premier shopping destination.
3. Walgreens
As part of its massive multi-year plan to shutter 1,200 underperforming stores by 2027, Walgreens is continuing to trim its Maine footprint. This April, several "low-traffic" pharmacies with expiring leases are slated for closure. Notably, the former Walgreens site in South Portland (Main St) has already been targeted for municipal redevelopment, signaling the brand's broader retreat from specific local markets.
4. Orangetheory Fitness
In a move reflecting a shift in the fitness industry, Orangetheory is consolidating its Maine operations. The location at The Maine Mall is officially scheduled to close permanently on April 10, 2026. Members are being redirected to the nearby Westbrook location as the brand trims its mall-based presence to focus on newer development hubs.
5. Orvis
The historic outdoor gear retailer is in the midst of closing nearly half of its retail locations nationwide. As the company returns to its "heritage roots" of fly fishing and wingshooting, it is shuttering 31 stores and five outlets by early 2026. While Orvis maintains a strong dealer network in Maine, its dedicated retail storefronts are among those being reviewed for final closure this month as part of this downsizing effort.
Important Information for Maine Shoppers
- Final Liquidations: At Francesca's and Eddie Bauer, discounts have likely reached 70% to 90% as they enter their final weeks. Be aware that all sales at these locations are final.
- Gift Card Alert: If you hold gift cards or store credit for Francesca's, it is highly recommended to use them immediately. Once the final doors lock on April 30, these credits may become void.
- Prescription Transfers: For any closing Walgreens branches, patient records are typically transferred automatically to the nearest surviving location. Customers should check the Walgreens app or call their local pharmacist to confirm the new pickup location before their next refill.
