Philadelphia, PA - The 2026 trout season in Pennsylvania is shaping up to be a massive year for anglers, with millions of fish hitting the water across the Commonwealth. The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission (PFBC) has officially launched its stocking operations to ensure that every corner of the state is ready for the upcoming season.
Total Trout Stocked in 2026
For the 2026 season, the PFBC plans to stock approximately 3.2 million adult trout. This massive effort spans 684 streams and 130 lakes open to public angling.
In addition to the state-raised fish, cooperative nurseries operated by local sportsmen's clubs are expected to contribute another 1.1 million trout, bringing the total number of fish released across Pennsylvania to over 4.3 million.
Species Breakdown
The PFBC focuses on three primary species, ensuring a diverse experience for fly-fishers and bait-casters alike:
- Rainbow Trout: ~2.3 million
- Brown Trout: ~698,000
- Brook Trout: ~128,000
On average, these stocked trout measure about 11 inches in length and weigh just over half a pound.
Special Releases: Trophies and Goldens
If you are looking for a "bucket list" catch, 2026 offers plenty of opportunities for trophy-sized fish.
- Trophy Trout: The Commission is releasing approximately 72,000 brood fish. These are 2.5 to 3.5-year-old trout that measure between 14 and 20 inches.
- Golden Rainbow Trout: A fan favorite, roughly 18,000 of these vibrant, orange-pigmented fish will be stocked throughout the state. About 75% are released during the preseason, with the remaining 25% added during in-season replenishment.
Important Dates for the 2026 Season
Stocking began the week of February 16, 2026, but remember that fishing is prohibited on designated "Stocked Trout Waters" until the official season begins (with one exception).
- Mentored Youth Trout Day: Saturday, March 28, 2026
- Statewide Opening Day: Saturday, April 4, 2026 (Starting at 8:00 AM)
How to Get Involved
The PFBC relies heavily on the "3.2 million reasons to fish" and the volunteers who help make it happen.
- Volunteering: Most stocking events are open to the public. You can check the official PFBC schedule for the meeting place and time for your local waterway to help bucket fish into the stream.
- Licensing: Remember that all anglers aged 16 and older must have a valid Pennsylvania fishing license and a trout permit.
Whether you are heading to the legendary limestone streams of Central PA or a local lake in the suburbs, 2026 is a fantastic year to get outdoors and enjoy the Commonwealth's natural resources.
