Philadelphia, PA - Chef Walter Staib has sadly announced he would be closing The City Tavern, located at 138 South 2nd Street in Philadelphia, at the intersection of Second and Walnut Streets.
City Tavern Closes After Business Decreases During Pandemic
Chef Staib opened the City Tavern back in 1994 to give guests a way to experience authentic 18th-century American culinary history.
The Tavern, which hosted scores of visitors from all over the world, was known for its Colonial costumed waitstaff and authentic 18th-century cuisine.
Sadly the Tavern was unable to survive the coronavirus pandemic since its primary customer base relied mostly on the tourism industry and overseas guests.
The National Park Service reconstructed the Tavern during the 1976 bi-centennial. The original 18th-century building was known to be frequented by the Founding Fathers of the United States.
The loss of The City Tavern is yet just another blow to the cities restaurant and tourism industry. It unknown at this time if the Park Service has plans to reopen the historic building.
