Philadelphia, PAGilben's Bakery Philadelphia, PA. - This was a treat. I saw a posting online about Gilben's garlic rolls. The next thing you know, I am in their neighborhood, the intersection of East Mount Airy, Stenton, and West Oak Lane.

Gilben's Bakery Philadelphia, PA.

I just noticed they have a very impressive 4.6 rating on 495 reviews on Google, and they have parking, kind of. Is it a 'parking lane'?

Some people park on the right, and some people park on the left; it gets congested but seems to work itself out.

I was looking for a homemade garlic bread roll, so a bakery is an excellent place to be looking. The awning is bright, and the word 'Bakery' is featured everywhere. 'Specialty Sandwich Shop' is in small print beneath 'Bakery.'

The bakery stuff looked terrific. I wish I had gotten a Chocolate Custard donut. Still, I am also glad I wasn't hungry because I would have spent a lot of money on baked goods that would not be good for my diet.

The customers inline looked to be half bakery and half sandwich. This was a family operation with mom running the counter and cash register. I think the dad came out and added some cakes to the display case.

The sandwich menu was seafood and Po'boys, but I ordered a cheesesteak with fried onions. Every sandwich comes on a Gilben's garlic long roll, and if you put that much effort into your roll, do not destroy it by wrapping it up tightly in deli paper.

I loved the roll, but I guess it's baked, so the top and bottom are not crusty. It was like they sliced off the top and bottom. It was more perplexing than taste damaging.

A perfect amount of cheese mixed through the cheesesteak and an extra ladling of cheese across the top, and I assume it was a Gilben's made cheese sauce. This was a very well seasoned cheesesteak and overall a good sandwich.
