Philadelphia, PA - In the quaint and comfortable venue of the critically acclaimed Osteria on North Broad St., Tuesday night is where the magic unfolded.
Goose Island Beer Company CHRYSOS is the name and a collaboration between internationally acclaimed Montgomery County's Karamoor Estates vineyard and winery and Chicago's Goose Island beer Company. Latin for gold chrysos is a worthy name.
So what is this beautiful, compelling invention in my Glass? It is a 100% barrel-aged Saison using the wine barrels from Karamoor's Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot and Goose Islands unfiltered Sofie base. All this work renders the beer to pull the "devil's cut" from the barrels during its warm barrel storage. This endeavor extracts all the notes of Karamoors world-class wine and infuses them into Goose Island hypnotic Belgian-style farmhouse ale.
The end result is a clean, enlightening, and memorable taste that you would want to keep on hand at all times. Sadly,, though, this is only available in draft at Osteria and most Vetri Family restaurants, but that's okay. They would be delighted to take your reservation.
From Megan Lagesse's concept to the actual brewing and barreling that Austin Niestrom and Kevin Robinson performed, it marks quite an accomplishment for both Goose Island Beer Co. and Karamoor Estate Wines.
Just a quick note. The Holidays are fast approaching. Gifts of Karamoor wine and Goose Island beer would look lovely under someone's tree.
Chrysos Availability: Chrysos will be available via draft-only at Osteria as well as other locations in the Vetri Family of Restaurants, including Amis, Alla Spina, Lo Spiedo in the Philadelphia Navy Yard, and Pizzeria Vetri (2 Philadelphia locations).
About Goose Island: Sofie Goose Island Brewing Company is one of Chicago's original craft breweries – founded in 1988. Sofie, one of Goose Island's vintage ales, is a sparkling Belgian-style saison that is wine barrel-aged with hand zested orange peel. Spicy white pepper notes contrast the citrus tartness, and the light, refreshing, creamy vanilla finish will excite those fond of Champagne.
About Karamoor: 2013 Cabernet Franc Karamoor Estate Wines is a winery in Fort Washington, Penn., with some of the most acclaimed wines on the East Coast. Chrysos was aged in 2013 Cabernet Franc barrels—Karamoor Estate's most famous wine, with black cherry, oak toast, and fresh herb flavors.
About: Chrysos is a 100% barrel-aged saison featuring Goose Island's Sofie base aged in Karamoor's 2013 Cabernet Franc barrels. While Sofie is partially barrel-aged, Chrysos is 100 percent barrel-aged, bringing out more of the oak-heavy characteristics of the barrel and increasing the earthy notes that come from the Brettanomyces yeast. Chrysos was stored in a warm barrel warehouse to have the beer in an environment that encourages the growth of the Brettanomyces.
