Making Christmas: How German Immigrants Shaped an American Holiday

The Elfreth's Alley Association presents: “Making Christmas” a pop up exhibition that will take visitors through a historic tour of German American Christmases Past on display in the Museum Houses (124 and 126). In the 1700s, the majority of colonists did not celebrate Christmas.  This changed throughout the 1800s. Experience firsthand how Santa Claus, the Christmas tree, Christmas cookies, toys and the influence of retail all became a part of the celebration in America By 1870 Christmas was Established as a National Holiday.  

Open to the Public - Thanksgiving through New Year's Eve, Saturdays and Sundays 12:00-4:00pm, & Thursday evenings, November 30th, December 7th, 14th, 21st 5:00-8:00pm. Closed to the public December 2nd.  Admission $5.
