Donkey’s Place Cheesesteak Review

Eating the 2021 Cheesesteak Calendar at Donkey's Place, Camden, NJ.

Ever since my first visit to Donkey's Place, I have been fixated on their poppy seed roll and my crooked teeth. Now I think about how much meat Rob fits on his little grill.

I met guest eater Steve from the Philly Talks Podcast at Donkeys for a late lunch on Tuesday. We got a table relatively quickly.

My consigliere Mike O from Medford continually tells me he loves Donkey's meat (which may soon be on a t-shirt).

As we waited for our table, I took a picture of the mountains of meat cooking, marinating, and soaking in the heavenly grease that Rob had on the grill.

You can feel the history of the place sitting at the bar, especially since Donkey himself is looking down at you from his perch on top of the heavy wood bar back.

But sitting at one of the tables in the back gives you a chance to soak Donkey's Place's history. There were some 'older timers' sitting near us.

I wondered what the 'older times' from the '50s, '60s, and ’70s sat back there and talked about.

I got a cheesesteak. It still comes on a poppy seed round roll, but this time, I focused on meat, cheese, and onions.

The meat and onions on Rob's little grill allow everyone to blend in with each other's juiciness and flavor. Mike O is correct. It is good meat.

It is not chopped, and there is a lot of it. It is a round roll, so the meat is stacked. I call the onions sauteed. They remind me of the onions from the old street hot dog vendors. The cheese may get a little lost in the oniony goodness.
