PHILADELPHIA — A bizarre and fiery discovery on I-95 may be the latest smoking gun in a string of brazen cargo heists targeting tractor-trailers across Philadelphia.
Authorities recently responded to a vehicle engulfed in flames on the interstate. Inside the charred wreckage, investigators discovered "smoking meat"—a surreal clue that police believe connects the car fire to a highly organized food theft ring operating in the region. The fiery highway discovery comes on the heels of a massive theft where criminals made off with $10,000 worth of frozen beef from a parked rig. Early Thursday morning, around 4:00 AM, a coordinated crew targeted a tractor-trailer parked on the 5200 block of Devereaux Street in the city's Wissinoming neighborhood in Northeast Philadelphia.
According to reports, the truck driver was asleep in the cab of his rig when the robbery began. The trailer's shaking woke him, and he managed to pull out his cellphone to record the suspects as they broke the rear padlock and quickly unloaded five pallets of meat. The thieves then fled the scene in a dark gray Nissan sedan and two dark-colored SUVs.
This incident is just the latest in a wave of escalating food cargo thefts plaguing the city. Recently, thieves stole an estimated 3,000 pounds of frozen crab legs from a semi-truck in Southwest Philadelphia under similar circumstances. Detectives are currently working to determine if the smoldering vehicle found on I-95 was one of the getaway cars used to transport the stolen beef from the Northeast Philadelphia heist.
