PHILADELPHIA - Thanks to viral TikTok sounds and their undeniably chill demeanor, capybaras have skyrocketed in popularity. The world's largest rodents—native to South America and known for being incredibly relaxed around other animals—have become a massive draw at zoos across the country.

If you are based in the Delaware Valley, you might be wondering where you can see these semi-aquatic "giant guinea pigs" in person. While the Philadelphia Zoo and Elmwood Park Zoo no longer feature capybaras on exhibit, you don't have to travel far to find them.

Here are the three best places within a two-hour drive of Philadelphia to see capybaras.

1. Cape May County Park & Zoo (Cape May Court House, NJ)

Distance from Philly: ~1.5 Hours

If you want the best capybara experience near Philadelphia, head down the shore. The Cape May County Zoo is consistently ranked as one of the best free-admission zoos in the country, and their South American habitat is home to a thriving capybara herd.

The zoo's resident capybaras—Budette, Marigold, Buttercup, Capychino, and Goomba—are on exhibit daily. Even better, the zoo recently welcomed a litter of adorable capybara pups, making this summer the perfect time to visit.

Take it to the next level: For die-hard fans, the zoo offers a private, behind-the-scenes "Capybara Encounter." This paid experience allows you to get up close and personal with the herd, though it requires advanced booking through their education department.

2. Turtle Back Zoo (West Orange, NJ)

Distance from Philly: ~1 Hour 45 Minutes

Located in North Jersey, the Turtle Back Zoo is a highly accredited facility that offers a fantastic day trip for Philadelphia families. They feature a beautiful habitat where you can watch the capybaras swim and graze.

Take it to the next level: During the summer months, Turtle Back Zoo runs a special "Capybara Behind the Scenes" tour. For an additional ticketed fee (typically around $65), you get a 30-minute guided tour of the animal facility and a meet-and-greet with the animal keepers who care for them.

3. Lake Tobias Wildlife Park (Halifax, PA)

Distance from Philly: ~2 Hours

If you prefer a drive into Central Pennsylvania, Lake Tobias Wildlife Park offers a completely different vibe. Located near Harrisburg, this 150-acre park is famous for its open-air safari tours on specially designed cruisers.

Alongside the safari, they maintain traditional zoo exhibits where you can find their resident capybaras. It is a great, rustic alternative to traditional city zoos, offering plenty of interactive petting zoos and reptile encounters for younger kids.
