MASSACHUSETTS - The wave of retail restructuring continues to impact the Bay State this spring. As we move through April 2026, several household names are finalizing their exit from the Massachusetts market due to bankruptcy liquidations and strategic downsizing.
From the upscale corridors of the North Shore to the bustling shopping centers of the South Coast, here are the five major retail chains closing doors in Massachusetts this month.
1. Eddie Bauer
After failing to find a buyer during its Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings earlier this year, the operator of Eddie Bauer's brick-and-mortar stores is liquidating all 174 North American locations. Massachusetts is losing all four of its physical storefronts by April 30, 2026. This marks the end of an era for the 106-year-old brand in the state’s premier shopping destinations, including:
- Burlington (Burlington Mall)
- Lynnfield (MarketStreet)
- Wrentham (Wrentham Village Premium Outlets)
- Lee (Lee Premium Outlets)
2. Francesca’s
The women’s boutique staple, which has been a fixture in Massachusetts malls for over 25 years, is in the final stages of a total nationwide liquidation. Following its latest financial collapse, all remaining boutiques are scheduled to shutter by late April. Final "Going Out of Business" sales are currently underway at locations in Natick, Braintree, Seekonk, Dartmouth, and Holyoke, as well as popular Cape and Islands spots in Mashpee and Hyannis.
3. Saks Off 5th
As part of a massive luxury retail consolidation, Saks Global is closing nearly all of its "Off 5th" discount locations to focus on its high-end flagship stores. Two major Massachusetts hubs are slated for closure this month. The locations in Somerville (Assembly Row) and Wrentham are finishing their final markdowns, leaving the state with a significantly smaller footprint for designer-discount shopping.
4. Walgreens
The pharmacy giant is continuing its aggressive plan to shutter 1,200 underperforming stores nationwide. Massachusetts has been hit particularly hard this month, with several high-traffic urban and suburban locations reaching their final day of operation. Specifically, residents in Boston (757 Gallivan Blvd), Haverhill (800 River St), and Methuen (256 Pleasant St) will see their local branches close permanently by the end of April.
5. REI Co-op
In a surprising move for the outdoor enthusiast community, REI has confirmed the closure of its prominent Boston (Fenway) location this month. Citing declining sales and a shift in urban retail dynamics, the co-op is exiting its 401 Park Drive space. While other Massachusetts locations like Reading and Framingham remain open for now, the loss of the Fenway flagship represents a significant shift for the brand in the city.
Important Notes for Bay State Shoppers
- Gift Card Deadlines: At Eddie Bauer, gift cards are no longer being accepted as of mid-March. If you hold credits for Francesca’s, it is recommended to use them immediately, as stores may stop honoring them in the final days of April.
- Final Sales: Liquidation sales at these locations are now at the "final markdown" stage. Expect discounts of 70% to 90%, but remember that all sales are final—no returns or exchanges will be accepted.
- Prescription Transfers: For closing Walgreens locations, patient records are typically transferred to the nearest surviving branch. Customers are encouraged to use the Walgreens mobile app to confirm their new pickup point before their next refill.
