PhillyBite10MASSACHUSETTS - Following the same trend of retail restructuring, Massachusetts is experiencing its own wave of supermarket closures and service changes this month. The shift is largely driven by a pivot toward higher-performing locations and a focus on digital fulfillment.

Stop & Shop: Consolidation of "Underperforming" Sites

Stop & Shop, founded in Somerville over 100 years ago, continues to streamline its massive footprint across the Commonwealth. The chain is closing several locations that it has deemed "underperforming" to focus on its remodeled flagship stores.

The following Massachusetts locations have been identified for closure as part of this restructuring:

  • Brockton: 932 North Montello St.
  • Raynham: 36 New State Highway
  • Halifax: 341 Plymouth St.
  • Shrewsbury: 539-571 Boston Turnpike
  • Newton: 165 Needham St. (specifically the Fresh Market format)
  • Springfield: 415 Cooley St. (Note: Locations at 1600 Boston Rd. and 1277 Liberty St. remain open)
  • Worcester: 545 Lincoln St. (Note: Locations at 940 West Boylston St. and 949 Grafton St. remain open)
  • Pembroke: 24 Mattakeesett St. (Note: 125 Church St. remains open)

In-Store Banking and Retail Shifting

It isn't just the groceries that are disappearing; the "store-within-a-store" model is also being scaled back this month.

  • Banking Exits: Following the trend seen in Connecticut, major banks are closing in-store branches inside Massachusetts supermarkets to pivot toward digital banking. TD Bank is scheduled to close six Massachusetts branches by late April, including locations in Beverly, Chicopee, Centerville, Lowell, Pittsfield, and Peabody.
  • REI Boston: While not a grocer, the major retail anchor REI Co-op is closing its only Boston location in the Fenway area this spring, signaling a broader shift in how major brands view physical footprints in high-rent urban corridors.

The Impact on Food Access

For many of these communities—particularly in Brockton and Springfield—the loss of a major supermarket raises concerns about "food deserts." In response:

  • Food Donations: Stop & Shop has committed to donating the remaining non-perishable stock from closing stores to local partners, such as the Worcester County Food Bank, to help mitigate the immediate impact on local families.
  • Legislative Scrutiny: Massachusetts lawmakers are currently evaluating new regulations to prevent supermarkets from using aggressive "dynamic pricing" and facial recognition technology, which critics argue could further disadvantage shoppers in areas where competition is thinning out.

Massachusetts Retail Outlook 2026

Industry analysts project that while national chains like Aldi and Wegmans are still seeking growth opportunities in the Northeast, the era of the "mega-footprint" suburban supermarket is being replaced by smaller, tech-forward urban markets and automated fulfillment centers.
