Philadelphia, PA - A beloved Philadelphia institution is closing its doors after 25 years. Devon Seafood, a popular steak and seafood restaurant located in the heart of Rittenhouse Square, will serve its last meal on December 31st.
The closure will affect 76 employees, according to a notice filed with the Pennsylvania Department of Labor. Landry's, the restaurant's parent company, has stated that it will attempt to place those affected in other area locations.
This news comes on the heels of another Landry's closure in Philadelphia. Chart House, located on the Delaware River waterfront, is also slated to close at the end of November. Landry's owns several other restaurants in the region and across the country.
Devon Seafood has been a staple in Rittenhouse Square, known for its fresh seafood, upscale ambiance, and prime location at 225 South 18th Street. While the Philadelphia location is closing, Devon Seafood will continue to operate in Hershey, Pennsylvania, and Oakbrook Terrace, Illinois.
The reason for the closure has not been explicitly stated. However, the increasing costs of operating a restaurant in a prime location like Rittenhouse Square, coupled with the challenging economic climate, may be contributing factors.
The closure of Devon Seafood marks the end of an era for many Philadelphians who have enjoyed the restaurant's offerings over the past two and a half decades.
