Rustica Pizza PhiladelphiaPhiladelphia, PA - This Cheesesteak fell victim to high expectations, poor planning, and being overpriced. It was a day of beers and cheesesteaks with Amigo Dan. We wanted to do a day of cheesesteaks and beer in Philadelphia bars before the new COVID restrictions took place.

Rustica Specialty Cheesesteaks

I have seen great pictures of Rustica food online and was very excited to try their Cheesesteak. At first, I thought Rustica was a bar from their website. But I was sad to find out that Rustica is a mostly take-out pizza shop.

But I could buy beer at the foodery a few stores away and bring it to Rustica to drink with my Cheesesteak.

They have 4ish tables inside, a couple tables outside, a bathroom, and dog biscuits for our four-legged friends.

Rustica’s menu offers four specialty cheesesteaks. I asked the young man at the counter which of the four specialty cheesesteaks represented Rustica the best. He recommended the Tartufo.

I thought/hoped he would say the Gut Bomb, brisket, pancetta, caramelized onions, and provolone.

We ordered the Tartufo Cheesesteak with truffle cream and caramelized onions. The price seemed a touch high, but I saw great things online and had high hopes for this Cheesesteak.

It came on a seeded roll. The roll was good. It had a fair amount of meat. It is good meat. It is real meat because I found two small pieces of gristle.

It had a fair amount of cheese, and the cheese is melted throughout the Cheesesteak well. The caramelized onions were very lovely.

The truffle cream and $13.95 left us baffled, confused, and wanting more of something. This is one of those cases where you have excellent ingredients, and they just weren’t in sync this day.
