PHILADELPHIA - As a longtime admirer of Philadelphia's dining scene, I felt the void when Tequilas on Locust Street closed due to a fire two years ago. So, when I heard it was finally reopening alongside a brand-new sibling spot, La Jefa, I knew I had to be one of a first to experience its return. I'm thrilled to report that Tequilas is back and better than ever, and its new companion, La Jefa, is a fantastic and unique addition to Rittenhouse Square.
I started my evening by stepping back into the newly redesigned Tequilas. The space feels fresh and revitalized, yet it still holds that classic, sophisticated charm it was always known for. It was comforting to see the menu filled with the authentic, classic Mexican dishes that made it a city institution. I indulged in some of their iconic offerings, including a perfectly prepared chile relleno and savory enchiladas suizas. It felt like welcoming back an old, dear friend. The quality and depth of flavor are just as I remembered, a true testament to their culinary resilience.
After dinner, I headed next door to experience La Jefa, which operates as a daytime café and transforms into one of the city's most ambitious cocktail bars in the evening. The vibe is completely different but equally compelling. During the day, it's a bright, welcoming spot for Mexican coffee, fresh-pressed juices, and what they're calling "Guadaladelphian" cuisine—a creative exploration of the culinary connections between Philly and Guadalajara.
I was immediately drawn to their lonches, which are hearty Mexican sandwiches that are a must-try. But as evening set in, the space's transformation into a sophisticated cocktail bar was incredible. The drink menu is inventive and expertly crafted, making it an instant contender for one of the best new places to grab a cocktail in the city.
The combination of the reborn Tequilas and the brand-new La Jefa creates a powerhouse duo on one of Philly's best corners. You can have a classic, elegant Mexican dinner at Tequilas and then step over to La Jefa for a creative nightcap, or visit La Jefa during the day for a fantastic brunch or coffee. It's so exciting to have this corner of Rittenhouse buzzing with life again. This isn't just a reopening; it's a bold and delicious new beginning.
