Friends of Independence - The Friends of Independence was created in 1972 and is the first Friends group in the National Park Service. Over our long history we have purchased or acquired over 1,000 artifacts for the park’s permanent collections, fund-raised for large public spaces in the park and provided educational tours and programs to visitors and locals alike.

The Twilight Tours are free evening walking tours that occur from mid-June through Labor Day.  Each tour is led by a volunteer guide who has been trained to give an exceptional, one of a kind tour.  Tours leave from the Ranger Desk at the Independence Visitor Center which is located at 6th and Market Streets.  Tours start at 6:00 pm and last approximately an hour.

If you are interested in history, enjoy talking about about our city and want to be a friendly face to a visitor, join the Twilight Tour Guides.

How does it work?
New guides are given a handbook which includes information on how to develop tours as well as lead a tour.  They also go through a mentoring program where they are paired up with experienced guides to shadow and to ask for advice.  You will not be asked to give a tour until you and your mentor have agreed that you are ready.

Requirements to be a Twilight Tour Guide
  • You have to be a current member of the Friends of Independence NHP
  • You have to be willing to research and develop a tour based on given guidelines
  • You have to be available during the summer months
  • You have to be interested in the history of Independence and sharing that knowledge with the visitors
