Salt blocks have the capacity to retain large amounts of thermal energy; and are able to stay hot for quite some time, even after you  removed them from flames., The salt blocks themselves can maintain temperatures from -321° F. to 1473° F. The block can also be used in the oven, on the stove, or on your backyard grill to cook a variety of proteins and vegetables. Salt blocks can also be used as a serving plate for cold dishes and appetizers.

Tips for Cooking on Salt Blocks

  • Make sure your blocks are completely dry prior to applying any heat for around 24 hours.
  • Although salt blocks have a threshold for very high temperatures, avoid any drastic heat changes. Start by warm up the salt block at low temperature and then increase it to the desired heat level. This way you will avoid cracking the blocks.
  • Salt blocks can also be used to serve food and keep cold by chilling in the blocks in fridge for about an hour.
  • Don’t use water-based liquids or butters for cooking. The water will pull too much of the salt flavor in and may overpower your the meal. Use olive oil or cover with herbs like rosemary to keep meats from sticking.
  • Try using a small salt block as a serving plate. The appearance will change over time with cooking and the surface will acquire various, interesting new colors and shades similar to how cast iron and the block becomes seasoned with use.
