With now up to six Pope themed beers in the making, the Pope's visit is getting more interesting by the day. Visitors will be able to enjoy local beers inspired my his holiness while waiting in crowds to witness history in the making. The Philadelphia Business Journal notes that Victory Brewery, Yards Brewing Company , and Saint Benjamin Brewing Co have all officially passed on the pun-heavy trend, with Tom Kehoe of Yards musing, "We don't think it's that classy to do it."
Philly Area Breweries Making Papal Beer
2nd Story Brewing Company - Willl be brewing Patersbier, going by the name Pater Noster 4.4% ABV, for the Pope's visit (made with Pilsner malt and red wheat and fermented with Trappist yeast).
Cape May Brewery Company - You Only Pope Once Beer, after trying Argentinean hops with little sucess, Cape May Brewery settled on "an unholy amount of hops,"of 9 varieties including Simcoe and Citra. Available at the taproom in Cape May and other Pennsylvania and New Jersey spots around mid-September.
Crime and Punishment's Brewery - Brewing a Jesus Wept Beer not named after the Pope, but will roll out its own religious-themed brew in September, in honor of the papal visit. Jesus Wept is a gose, a sour wheat beer with a distinctive saltiness.
Iron Hill's Brewery & Restaurant - Iron Hill's Pap-Ale will be a dubbel "loosely based on" patersbier, expect a more sessionable Belgian-style mahogany brew. AT 4.5% ABV, lower in alcohol content than a typical dubbel, and similar to 2nd Story patersbier. This limited release (there are just four kegs to go around) will be available only at Iron Hill's Chestnut Hill location, with the first tapping scheduled for Friday, September 18 at 5 p.m. A 16-ounce pour will go for $6.25.
